We Are a Small Farm in Pownal, Maine

At Snowfields Farm we are dedicated to practicing organic farming methods and, for us, there is no greater reward than being able to share what we grow with others while promoting local, sustainable food and flower production.  Our CSA farm shares provide a weekly selection of fresh, seasonal produce and our barn is available to rent for private events allowing for direct farm-to-table dining.

Why choose CSA?

CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture, can be thought of as a contract between farmer and community. Essentially, when you sign up for a CSA share you are signing up for your portion of this year’s harvest. This partnership between farmer and consumer is mutually beneficial as the customer helps to relieve some of the seed costs for the farmer, and then gets to reap the rewards come summertime when the harvest is bountiful. If you’re still not convinced, here are 6 more reasons why a CSA is the way to go:

1. Early Farm Capital - The early spring months can sometimes be challenging for farms to get all the funds they need for seeds, potting soil, compost, and other supplies. By signing up early and committing to your share of the harvest, you give us needed financial support for getting our season going!

2. Value- The CSA model is a great deal for the customer because we are able to sell our veggies at a lower cost than you would find at retail markets. By signing up early you sign on to fixed price for the season, think of it like a wholesale subscription!

3. Local = Fresh- Anyone who has had a home garden can testify to how much longer their food stays fresh compared to what you buy at the grocery stores. When you buy a CSA share with us you will see that this is true for produce fresh off the farm too! We harvest our veggies on the same day you pick them up, ensuring that they are at peak freshness for you and your family.

4. Food Security- In times of uncertainty, knowing who grows your food and where it comes from is one less thing you need to worry about. By supporting small farms like ours, you are supporting other farms we partner with in our community that are just as dedicated to providing us all with delicious and nutritious food. When you sign on for a season with us you are making a commitment to us and to other farmers that what we do is important to you!

5. Health is Wealth- It is now more important than ever to be mindful about the food we consume. Not only are our super fresh vegetables packed with nutrients, but we never use any sprays or pesticides on our crops and that is our promise!

6. Seasonal is Sustainable- As wonderful as it is to have a tomato in January, the amount of energy and fossil fuels it takes to produce and transport that tomato to your countertop is simply put, not “green”. Eating a seasonal diet with our CSA is an amazing way to reduce your climate impact and start to learn how to cook what grows in a season here in Maine.
