Week 12 - Peppers, potatoes and precipitation!

Fall transitions.

Fall weather can be changeable and after last week's frosts it's been back to warm and dry so we’ve been watering like crazy to get some new seeds germinating for the final weeks of the share. Thankfully, some rain is here with more on the way, so we expect some relief this week.

As you can probably tell, this update is all about the peppers, so let’s go deep and share a little backstory on what we’re going to have on offer…

Starting with the bell peppers, at the top of the heap we have the King of the North, a robust, thick walled red pepper ideal for stuffing and baking or conquering Westeros, whatever you have on your agenda. Partnering the KotN, we have the Sweet Sunrise yellow pepper, which is sweet and fruity, so ideal for salads or stir frying.

For our Cubanelle-style sweet peppers we’ve opted for two of the Italian Corno Di Toro (bull’s horn) variety. Here we have the two star-crossed lovers from Bizet’s opera, Carmen and EscamilloCarmen ripens to a deep, passionate red and its sweetness stands out in salads and when grilled or roasted. The broad shouldered toreador, Escamillo is golden-yellow when ripe and traditionally used for frying, but of course pairs beautifully together with Carmen in any dish. Ah, l’amour est un oiseau rebelle!

Also in the share we have the last of summer squash (we swear!), the full spectrum of tomatoes, lettuce mix and broccoli florets.

Over the next week, we will be sending out a survey asking for your thoughts and feedback about the CSA. We can’t tell you how important you all have been to this very first growing season at Snowfields Farm and we are dedicated to making the CSA bigger and better in 2021. We want to hear from you about the things that will bring more value to the share, so please take a few minutes and help to shape our future - we really appreciate all of your support, patience and encouragement in 2020!

See you soon!

Emma
