Week 8 CSA Pick Up

This week marks the half way point for our CSA, which has been heralded with the days getting shorter and mornings a little cooler. Fortunately it's still great growing weather, and warm enough for Bran to have to find some shade under the collard greens! The bees are also really enjoying the buckwheat flowers, which is the cover crop we planted around the high tunnel to help with weed suppression. It'll soon be mowed to provide organic matter to the soil for future planting, but not before the bees get their fill to make some delicious honey!

It was great to have a good soaking rain this past weekend, which keeps all the veggies happy and thriving, and set us up nicely to do some some seeding of late fall crops. Soon the colorful squash and cucumbers will be gone but we have cabbage and potatoes growing to take their place, and cold-hardy greens are being sown.

Anyway, let’s not be in too much of a hurry to say goodbye to summer! There will still be plenty of warm weather crops in this weeks share, including more lettuce mix, cucumbers, green beans, collard greens and summer squash. New to the share this week will be cherry tomatoes (pictured above) and kohlrabi. If you're not familiar with kohlrabi, it's a sweeter, crunchier relative to cabbage, which makes it a great coleslaw ingredient. Try it in your own slaw recipe, or we found this super simple 4-ingredient version from Martha Stewart to try. If you're feeling ambitious, there's a version with mint and cilantro that sounds delicious. Tell us what you think or share your own kohlrabi recipes by either posting to the Snowfields Farm Facebook page, or on Instagram @snowfieldsfarm.

Enjoy the week ahead and see you soon at the farm!
Reminder: Pick up days this week are Monday, 8/31 and Wednesday, 9/2 from 4-6:30pm.
